Students of Simms Senior High School at Fawoade in the Kwabre East municipality of the Ashanti region have been displaced following a fire that swept through the boys’ dormitory block.
The sad incident occurred around 11am, Friday October 13, 2023, when students were in class.
No casualty was therefore reported but 3 out of the 4 rooms at the top floor of the one-storey dormitory block burnt with everything in them.
Each room is said to accommodate 42 students.
Fire service personnel arrived at the scene in less than 5 minutes but the fire had quickly spread by then.
“We had a distressed call around 11.40am and by the time we arrived three rooms had already been consumed by the fire. The fire spread quickly because of the flammable materials such as mattresses and books in the rooms. We did everything possible to ensure it didn’t spread to other areas”, Ashanti regional fire PRO, DO3 Peter Addai said.
The fire fighters however managed to prevent it from spreading to one room at the top floor and the other four rooms on the ground floor.
For now, the displaced students would have to perch with their friends in the unaffected dormitory whilst school authorities think about the next line of action.
The Mampongteng Fire station has begun investigation to establish the cause of the fire.
