Residents of Offinso in the Ashanti Region are questioning the King of Ashanti, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, over his continuous refusal to accept the nomination of Dr. KK Sarpong, a former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) as their new chief.
According to them, Otumfuo has no power to reject any chief selected by the Queen Mother to lead their people.
“We are here today, and we are using this medium to communicate our frustrations. Our Queen mother selected KK Sarpong as the new Chief of Offinso, but he was rejected by Otumfuo Osei Tutu, and a committee was formed over this.
After the Committee did its work and made the needed findings, it turned out all the allegations levelled against him were false, and so we are still shocked that he hasn’t been made the Chief of Offinso.
Today we want Otumfuo to be aware that if it’s not KK Sarpong whom he will bless to become the Chief of Offinso, then he should not pick anyone else. Our Queen says KK Sarpong is the next chief for Offinso,” they said when they met the press.
Background
Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II rejected the nomination of the former Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana National Petroleum Company (GNPC), Dr. Kofi Kodua Sarpong as the Paramount Chief of Offinso.
According to the Asantehene, his objections to Dr. K.K. Sarpong’s nomination was because his nomination did not follow due process.
He said that the family heads who led the nomination process of Dr. Sarpong did not have the mandate to do so, and they also failed to consider some persons who have rights to the Offinso stool.
The Kingmakers of the Offinso Traditional Council in the Ashanti traditional area unanimously nominated Dr K.K. Sarpong as the successor of the late Paramount Chief of the area, Nana Awiafe Akenten III.
The Offinso Manhene died on Saturday, October 2, 2021, after falling ill for some days.
The kingmakers of the traditional area on Friday, May 6, 2022, at a ceremony in Offinso, through Akyeamehene Nana Kwaku Wiafe, presented Dr. Sarpong as the New Paramount Chief for the Offinso Traditional Council.
