Gov’t budget for AFCON 2023 leaked; $8.5m in total

It is emerging that the government of Ghana budgeted $8,506,450 for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2023).

An amount of $5,071,840.36 was initially requested from the Ministry of Finance to be released as part payment.

This was revealed by the Member of Parliament for North Tongue Constituency, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

“The figure US$8,506,450.00 is contained in an intercepted letter from the Ministry of Youth and Sports, dated 2nd January, 2024,” he wrote on X, formerly Twitter, o. Monday, January 29.

“It is addressed to the Minister of Finance requesting part payment of US$5,071,840.36 from the total Black Stars budget of US$8,506,450.00.

“The request letter in issue is signed by Chief Director of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Mr. William Kartey on behalf of the Minister, Hon. Mustapha Ussif.”

The Ministry of Youth and Sports (MOYS) had been called upon to release the state’s budget prior to the tournament.

The sector minister, however, assured that the full budget will be disclosed after the Black Stars’ campaign.

The senior men’s soccer team exited the tournament at the group stage.

They were beaten 1-2 by Cape Verde in their first game and drew 2-2 with Egypt and Mozambique in their subsequent games.
