Journalist Abdul Ibrahim Karim has compared John Dumelo’s backwards walk to King Agorkoli’s escape by the Ewe people.
His comment comes after Ghanaian actor, John Dumelo, walked bare footed and backwards to the campus of the Legon based Presbyterian Boys Senior High, (PRESEC) in Accra after losing a bet.
The actor had put up a bet that he was going to walk bare footed and backwards to the Presec campus at Legon, should Presec beats his alma mater, Achimota School in the 2023 National Science and Maths Quiz.
“John Dumelo might be onto something; Ewe man reverse walking, and barefoot, —even if coincidentally— under the rulership of one cast in the mould of a contemporary Agokorli seems quite like a powerful re-enactment of a truly profound historical account.” The journalist wrote.
According to legend, Togbe Agorkoli was the mythical ruler of Notsie, a town in modern Togo.
During his rule, the Ewe peoples in what are now Ghana and Togo escaped from Notsie to their present lands.
He ruled the Ewe with an iron fist and had any person who spoke against him put on trial and inevitably found guilty, which meant a death sentence.
When the Ewe people decided they did not want to suffer under his rule, they sought a very famous and powerful hunter known as Togbe Tsali. During a festive holiday, it is said that he enchanted the drums to put all the royals and Togbe Agorkoli to sleep.
He then mobilized the citizens to pass through a crevice made in a thick mud wall, resulting in the Ewe people’s freedom from Notsie. While escaping, Tsali convinced the citizens to walk backwards, confusing their pursuers.
