Ghana’s Ambassador to Burkina Faso, His Excellency Boniface Gambila, has dispelled assertions that Ghana’s relationship with her neighbour, Burkina Faso will be negatively impacted by the exit of Burkina Faso from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The Ambassador explained that the personal and diplomatic relationship between the leaders of the two countries remain strong despite the decision of Burkina Faso to leave ECOWAS over its dissatisfaction with the regional body’s handling of affairs that concern it.
He is optimistic that there would not be any negative trade implications for Ghana.
“Our two presidents are very close and since they are very close…and historically, the fact that we are brothers and sisters, this would not affect us. I am very optimistic. Don’t let any security analyst sit back there and frighten you. There would be nothing of the sort,” Ambassador Gambilla said in an interview with Bolgatanga-based A1 Radio.
Three West African nations – Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger- exited ECOWAS in protest over unfair treatment by ECOWAS.
Some experts in international trade had argued that the exit of these countries would negatively impact trade and diplomatic relations. But the ambassador has dismissed these assertions.
