A full-scale investigation into the flooding in the Volta region resulting from the spillage of water from the Akosombo and Kpong dams will be conducted by the House of Parliament to bring those responsible for the disaster to book.

This is an assurance a Member of Parliament for one of the hard-hit areas in the Volta region, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has intimated.

The North Tongu lawmaker has revealed his intentions of “filing a motion for a full-scale probe” into the matter whilst speaking on TV3’s Ghana Tonight Monday, October 23, 2023.

According to Mr. Ablakwa, the probe will be televised for the public to witness those directly responsible for the mess that has cost the residents their homes and farmlands.

His reaction stems from a comment from the Sanitation and Water Resources minister, Freda Prempeh, that the residents in the affected areas were cautioned ahead of the spillage to evacuate but refused to.

“We don’t want what has happened at Akosombo to happen to us in Accra. The Akosombo spillage, even though VRA, NADMO, the water resources commission came together to educate the people in the community, did simulation exercise with them even at Mepe yet they refused to leave. They didn’t want to be evacuated. They stayed there till the end when we started spilling.

“Now people are blaming government, VRA, NADMO. These three institutions really did a lot of education right from January. Even in September they were still talking to the people to move because there was the likelihood they were going to spill in the next week or two because the rainfall patterns have changed, climate change…you cannot anticipate when it was going to rain. So even if they start to spill on a very gradual note the rain could also fall and the dam will keep coming up,” Freda Prempeh, the Sanitation and Water Resources Minister had pointed out.

But reacting to the issue, the North Tongu MP said they are lies and that government should wait for their next line of action which will be a motion in Parliament for a televised probe.

“We are going to file a motion to Parliament for a full-scale probe. It will be live on television. Every Ghanaian will get into these matters. We’ll delve into the matters and know exactly what happened. Who are those who took these decisions? All these blatant lies would be exposed. We will insist that officials who have caused this as though they wanted to commit mass murder would be made to face the music.

“In addition to that, we would be demanding full compensation and everything would be done under the sun to make sure that they pay dearly for their actions. So, they should stop these blatant lies, very despicable statement. Nobody is a squatter here. I do not have squatters in my constituency. You can’t speak to us that way,” he indicated.
